The gist of this post is to explain that attention isn't an action you can take like lifting your arm. Your can't learn to pay attention. You can learn to gaze in a direction (but that's not attention). You can only pay attention if you care about the topic and at that point attention is simply a need, coupled with forming a memory when your register something that satisfies the need.
